RESEARCH POLICY

PCGS RESEARCH POLICY

To assist you in researching your Placer County ancestors, our volunteers will search for you the Placer County resources that are available at the Auburn-Placer County Library and the Auburn LDS Family History center.

Search fees are based on the time involved in accessing and searching the records. We will provide you with a detailed checklist of the records that were searched and with copies of any records that are found. However, we can not guarantee that your ancestors appear in the records.

Please submit your request by letter using the following guidelines:

All research requests must be made in writing. From the list given in this pamphlet, please specify the record(s) to be searched and include at least the minimum information required to conduct the search. It is often helpful if you can provide additional information about the individual or family.
Search fees must be paid in advance. Make check or money order payable to Placer County Genealogical Society.
Enclose a large self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) with your request.
Please allow at least 4 weeks for a reply to your request.

Birth Records

Placer County Birth Register 1873-1902
Information required for search: surname of father.
Fee: $5.00 for first name searched.
$3.00 for each additional name searched at the same time.

Cemetery Records

We have tombstone recordings of 35 Placer County cemeteries. Most records date from before 1940.
Information required for search: name of individual, approximate year of death, and name of cemetery. If cemetery is unknown, send place (town/city) of residence or death and we will search closest surrounding cemeteries.
Fee: $5.00 for first name searched.
$3.00 for each additional name searched at the same time.

We will search and abstract the deed indexes for you. These are indexes only. They give names of grantor and grantee, date of deed, and the volume and page number where the deed is recorded.

Marriage Records

Placer County Marriage Records 1852-June 1905
Placer County Marriage Index 1905-1938 (index only, gives names of groom & bride and date of marriage)
Information required tot search: name of groom and/or bride and approximate year of marriage.
Fee: $5.00 for first marriage searched.
$3.00 for each additional marriage searched at the same time.

Naturalization Records

Placer County Naturalization Records 1852-1926 (includes declarations of intention, petitions and certificates)
Indexes to Petitions and Naturalizations 1927-1980 (indexes only, give name, date of petition or certificate, name of court, and file number)
Information required for search: name of individual and approximate year of naturalization.
Fee: $8.00 per name for records 1926 and earlier.
$5.00 per name for indexes 1927 and later.

Newspapers

We will search Placer County newspapers, issued September 1852 to present, Available at the Auburn-Placer County Library. For dates after 1907, we have, available newspapers published in Auburn only.
Information required for search: name of individual, type of event, place of event (if known) and date of event (month and year minimum).
Fee: $5.00 per item if full date is known.
$8.00 per item if month and year only are known.

Indexes to births, deaths, and marriages published in the Placer Herald, 1852-1869, are available on our web site. Name and year of event only are required when ordering from these indexes.

Probate Indexes

Placer County Index to Probates 1852-1937 (index only, gives name of deceased, year, type of file, and file number)
Placer County Probate Register 1851-1872 (gives name of deceased and list of documents or court actions in the probate file)
The probate index and register include estates, guardianships, adoptions, and termination of homesteads.
Information required for search: name of deceased and approximate year of death.

Information required for search: name of individual and year(s) to be searched. The following years are available:
1867, 1869, 1871, 1872, 1873, 1876, 1877, 1879, 1880, 1882, 1884. 1886, 1888, 1890, 1892, and 1894.
Fee: $2.00 per name, per year.
$5.00 minimum order.

World War I Draft Registration Cards

Information required for search: name of individual.
Fee: $5.00 for first name searched.
$3.00 for each additional name searched at the same time.
